2020 was a year of loneliness, new hobbies, and self-discovery. In my case, it was the year I became a Gorillaz super-fan. I remember distinctly going through every music video that was available on their YouTube channel and being enthralled by all the lore.
I’m a long-time beabadoobee fan, so getting to see her live was a long time coming, but it was extremely worth the wait. It means everything when a musician you feel passionate about clearly cares just as much about their music as you do. Her entire team did a phenomenal job portraying the concept of this album: the stage, the band, the lighting, visuals, and audio. beabadoobee is truly a one-of-a-kind musician, and I’m already counting down the days until I can attend one of her shows again.

Violet Grohl has been one of the most interesting artists that I have started listening to over the past year. Her music exists in this space of 90s grunge, but also there is a lot of atmospheric rock and shoegaze influence in her songs as well. Her music live can only be described as completely overwhelming. The loud bang of the drums, the smoothness of the basslines, and her soft yet imposing voice completely surround you when you’re at one of her shows. To borrow an old recording term, it was like a wall of sound moved across the room, absorbing everyone inside it.

Following the resounding success of his debut album, “Box for Buddy, Box for Star” (which has now been released in a super deluxe version in dialogue with Jeff Tweedy, Waxahatchee, Hayley Williams, Snail Mail, and other musical talents), Nate Amos continues to broaden his sonic range through his newest bluegrass-inspired piece, “The Singer in My Band”, which was released on September 11.
In June, Olivia Rodrigo celebrated extreme joy and extreme sadness with the release of her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. Shortly after the album came out, Rodrigo announced that she would fulfill her dream of creating and hosting a festival, Daisy Chain Fields, where 100% of the net proceeds went to charities. To celebrate the event and its meaning, “advancing and advocating for [the betterment of] women and girls,” Rodrigo released “serena joy” five days before the show took place in Irvine, California.
