Charles Street

By Reporter Gabby Berry

From the bustling Bostonians on the brick-paved pathways, to the faint yet soothing rhythm of performers in the Boston Commons as you move further North, Charles Street in Beacon Hill is unlike any other. People of all ages line the streets to peer through the enticing windows of boutiques and shops of all kinds.

Local businesses and shops build the atmosphere, and we owe it to them for the sense of community they provide. One significant store would be Charles Street Supply, a staple of Beacon Hill since 1948. This family-owned business has been a familiar foundation for long-lasting businesses in the city. Jack Gurnon, the business owner, said he loves it here in Beacon Hill.

“I’ve been here over 50, and everyone knows everyone. Everyone looks out for everybody else and lends a hand in hand,” he said “And every day, I get to help somebody and be a hero to somebody that needs help. It’s really great.”

South of Gurnon’s family business is Beacon Hill Hotel, a 19th-century building inspired by European hospitality and New England charm. Designed by a Beacon Hill-based designer with local gallery art, this hotel is much more than a sanctuary for a few nights; it’s an appreciation for modernity and the generations of Beacon Hill all in one. Austin Griffiths, an employee at Beacon Hill Hotel, enlightened me on his firsthand experiences with the community.

Griffith has worked throughout several seasons at Beacon Hill Hotel, and though some seasons are slower than others, he says their regulars are made up of people who appreciate community. Griffith also has the pleasure of creating interpersonal bonds with the surrounding businesses, including Toscano and Beacon Hill Books & Cafe.

“I’d like to think we work our best to get the best relationships,” he said.

Charles Street engulfs the newest and oldest Bostonian alike, allowing for a sense of belonging. The parallel rows of stores reflect off of each other, and each plays a key role in the Beacon Hill community.

It’s important that we uplift businesses in our community that we otherwise would walk right past. The next time you’re taking a stroll to clear your head or to keep busy, find Charles Street. There are plenty of local shops and restaurants alike that serve to make Boston feel like home.
