This weeks’ artist On The Verge is brother-sister duo, Blondfire. Erica and Bruce formed the band in 2004, and are now really starting to make some waves. Funny enough, the song that is doing this for them is their new single, “Waves.” The indie pop band from Los Angeles, California released an EP in 2011 titled Where The Kids Are. The EP contains four songs, including “Waves,” and is available on iTunes. This EP gave a spark to Blindfire’s career. In August 2011, they signed with Warner Bros. Music and Primary Wave Music.

They’ve spent the past few months on the road, touring around the country with some of the biggest bands in indie rock including Surfer Blood and Foals. They’re coming back to the Boston area this week, this time with Kopecky Family Band. They’ll be at Iron Horse Music Hall in Northhampton, MA on June 20th, and Brighton Music Hall in Boston on June 21st.

Be sure to tune in today at 4:15 PM to listen to this weeks’ On The Verge artist, Blondfire. And don’t forget the name—they won’t be on the verge for much longer!

Every Tuesday we’ll take a look around the music scene and bring you updates on, you guessed it, the new albums coming out this week.

THE MOWGLI’S, WAITING FOR THE DAWN

This is the major label debut album from the eight piece rock band from southern California. After riding on success from their extremely catchy single “San Francisco” the band has come out with a thirteen track album for you to dance to. The Mowgli’s frontman Colin Dieden explains the higher goal of their album saying, “We’re trying to create a movement based on live, to make art for purpose of love to better this planet and our species.”

SIGUR RÓS, KVEIKUR

This is the seventh studio album from Icelandic rock group Sigur Rós. The anticipation for Kveikur was met by the release of two singles from the album, “Brennisteinn” and “ĺsjaki” during the months before the release. Sigur Rós have taken a new direction, both musically and thematically with Kveikur and it is a “more aggressive” than their previous albums. The band also went on an 82 date tour in late 2012 through 2013 as promotion of Kveikur.

Though not related by blood, the six members of Kopecky Family Band have created a bond fortified by the roads they’ve traveled and the songs they’ve written. The Family was born out of an in-dorm jam session back in 2007 and displays its interconnectedness through its member’s ability to create enduring harmonies and perform and swap multiple instruments with each other during live shows, which have included acclaimed performances at last year’s CMJ Music Festival and this year’s SXSW. The versatility and individual strengths of each member blend together seamlessly enough to earn this family favorable comparisons to groups like Fleetwood Mac.

Last April, Kopecky Family Band released their long-awaited full-length debut, Kids Raising Kids, featuring the infectious lead single “Heartbeat.” They are currently on tour in support of the new album and will be playing at the Brighton Music Hall in Boston this Friday, June 21 with this week’s On The Verge artist, Blondfire. But not before stopping by the WERS studios to give you an exclusive in-studio performance live on-air, so make sure to tune in and check them out only on 88.9 WERS!

The Pixies, or rather Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering (the other members), released a statement yesterday stating that bassist Kim Deal won’t be playing with the band anymore. Here is the official statement:

We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

Reactions to this news ranges from a known understanding (based on the tension between Deal and Francis) to the notion that The Pixies are not the same band without Kim (a fair assertion). This break up statement is notably more conciliatory than when Francis fired Deal from The Pixies in 1993 via fax. With rumors of a new album from the band flaring up last September, and a new book titled “Pixies: A Visual History” currently being worked on, this news comes as both a surprise and a let down.

Deal, who has not yet released a statement about her departure at this time, is currently touring with her band The Breeders to support the 20th anniversary re-release of their hit album Last Splash.
