Artist of the Week: MGMT

MGMTMGMT released their third album, their first self-titled effort, this past fall and are currently touring the U.S. with a date in Boston this Thursday at the Orpheum! We are so thrilled to announce them as their Artist of the Week here at WERS.

With roots right here in New England, founding members Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser at Wesleyan University in Connecticut as two kids in the dorms, experimenting with different styles of music and influences. The eventual product was the psychedelic sound that would propel MGMT to fame in the mid-2000s, and following their 2005 graduation they toured extensively in support of the Time To Pretend EP, which would later expand into 2007′s blockbuster studio album Oracular Spectacular.

After shortening their name from The Management to MGMT, Columbia Records swept the two up to support their debut album and got a foothold on the beginnings of a fanbase by opening for major groups like Of Montreal, Radiohead, M.I.A., and dominating the summer music festival circuit in the late 2000′s. With a reputation for the trippy and weird, the band had a growing following and even racked up the likes of Paul McCartney in fans before releasing sophomore album Congratulations in 2010 to rave reviews.

One world tour later, the group began working on its third release MGMT, which was released this past September. As they continue on their tour, we are proud to announce MGMT as our WERS Artist of the Week!
