- About WERS
Frontwoman Lauren Mayberry always had music in the back of her mind, playing drums and piano since she was a teenager and played in local bands throughout her college career, but first opted for a four-year law degree and a master’s in journalism before fully delving into music as a career. Bandmates Iain Cook and Martin Doherty had met in college and Cook had played in larger acts Aerogramme and The Unwinding Hours, and the three came together with Cook as a producer, Doherty as a primary performer and Mayberry on featured vocals. Turn out, the combination was a winning one– initially intended as a one-off project featuring Mayberry in 2011, and decided to continue the collaboration following their first EP under the name CHVRCHES. Why the Roman “v” in place of “u”? To narrow down centuries of competition in a simple Google search, says Mayberry.
Following their first release, CHVRCHES released premiered tracks “Lies” and “The Mother We Share” close together, and the latter ended up gaining traction on year-end lists stateside as well as in htie home country, giving the little band that could a whole new audience. The band performed their first formal gig in their home country in June 2012, became a popular touring act and was picked up by a label by early 2013. Nine short months later, debut The Bones of What You Believe was released as a full-length album, CHVRCHES has opened for groups like Depeche Mode, Passion Pit, and Two Door Cinema Club, and are rapidly expanding their musical and social media presence globally.
WERS is thrilled to have CHVRCHES as our Artist of the Week!
