Artist of the Week: Cold War Kids

Cold War KidsWERS’ Artist of the Week is California-based band Cold War Kids, who are playing a show at the House of Blues on October 18th!

Begun in 2004 by frontman Jonnie Russell in his apartment, the group released their first two EPs, Mulberry Street and With Our Wallets Full before gaining national attention after over a year of rigorous touring. After their first record deal and the release of 2006′s Robbers and Cowards and the monster hit “Hang Me Up to Dry”, the band continued to tour and hone their sound before returning to the studio for their sophomore release Loyalty to Loyalty. This marked a new direction for the group and a distinctly philosophical tint to their material, and picked up some serious momentum after extended touring with Death Cab for Cutie in the year and change after the album’s release.

Cold War Kids is notorious for being a touring band– not only is the music itself great, but the group wins you over in their first several seconds onstage, all energy and excitement to be performing. When they do return to the studio every handful of years to crank out a new release, they are always willing to dabble in a different style that doesn’t compromise their experimental punk start back on Mulberry Street, and most recent release Dear Miss Lonelyhearts is a testament to just that. After nearly ten years together, the guys know how to write a catchy hook, but never compromise the substance of the music in the process– it’s for this that we’re pleased and excited to have Cold War Kids as our Artist of the Week!
