Throwback Thursday: John Lennon

John Lennon Yoko OnoThis week for Throwback Thursday we are playing a set of John Lennon in honor of what would have been his 73rd birthday.

John Lennon was born on October 9th in Liverpool, England to mother Julia and father Alfred. John Lennon spent most of his childhood living with his aunt and uncle in a small suburb of Liverpool. He received his first guitar, and inexpensive Gallotone Champion, from his mother in 1956. It was within the same year that Lennon started his first band, The Quarrymen. Lennon and a few schoolmates made a small skiffle rock group that would later evolve into the Beatles in 1960. Lennon met Paul McCartney at the Quarrymen’s second performance, after McCartney joined the group. Soon George Harrison joined the band as lead guitarist at the young age of 14. Brian Epstein became the group’s manager in 1962 and had a strong influence on the groups early dress code and stage performance. The band changed their name to the Beatles and began to receive mainstream success in the beginning of 1963. The craze of Beatlemania really began with the historic 1964 US debut of the band on The Ed Sullivan Show. From that moment on, the Beatles were a household name with countless albums, movies, and touring. After a long stint of success, Lennon chose to leave the group in 1969 in favor of a solo career. John Lennon’s solo career was also quite successful and he released a handful of albums. On December 8th 1980, Lennon’s life was cut short when a crazed fan shot and killed him.
