For many, Sunday night meant the annual MTV VMAs. I’m sure you’ve all read about the show or even watched it live and now, depressed at how far western civilization has fallen, you’re now ready for the sun to explode and destroy us all. BUT WAIT, there’s hope! Because hidden amongst all of the empty noise the VMAs offered, Flying Lotus (who was also at the VMAs) was secretly putting together his own radio station for the videogame Grand Theft Auto V! While mostly known for its controversial and awesome gameplay, Grand Theft Auto has had a slew of sprawling and diverse soundtracks with guest radio hosts such as Femi Kuti, Iggy Pop, and Chuck D. According to Pitchfork, the game will feature seventeen different radio stations along with a number of new songs from bands such as Wavves and Twin Shadow.
Flying Lotus’s radio station, named FlyLo FM, will feature a number of artists including Clam Casino, Aphex Twin, Thundercat, and Outkast along with his own music both as Flying Lotus and Captain Murphy. Flying Lotus took to Twitter to explain that being featured in Grand Theft Auto is a “geek dream come true” and that most of the songs are “unheard/exclusive.” He also stated that he attempted to get new music from Aphex Twin and Burial along with unreleased material from the legendary J Dilla, but there was “no luck on that.”
Grand Theft Auto V is set to be released on September 17th for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and will be one of the last games exclusive to this generation of consoles. The game follows Grand Theft Auto IV which has sold around twenty-five million copies since its 2008 release.
