Artist of the Week: Franz Ferdinand

Franz FerdinandThis week we are featuring Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand as our Artist of the Week.

Having taken their name from the archduke whose assassination launched World War I, Franz Ferdinand exploded onto the music scene within just two years of forming when their second single, “Take Me Out,” hit No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and when their self-titled debut album debuted at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart in 2004. The album was so well received that it earned the band a Mercury Prize and two BRIT Awards for Best British Group and Best British Rock ActFranz Ferdinand also made big splashes across the pond when “Take Me Out” also became a No. 3 hit on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Success continued to follow the band with their sophomore release, 2005′s You Could Have It So Much Better, which was certified Gold here in the States.

Franz Ferdinand then put together a “dirty pop” concept album with producer Dan Carey (Hot Chip, Lily Allen) that eventually became 2009′s Tonight. Although the album’s lead single, “Ulyesses,” found only moderate success, the follow-up single, “No You Girls”, became Franz Ferdinand’s second longest lasting single in the UK Top 100 and their third top 10 hit on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. After the band finished touring for Tonight, frontman Alex Kapranos was feeling so bogged down by the band’s obligations that he seriously considered breaking the band up. Yet when he and his bandmates went into the studio to record their fourth album he was reminded of what made playing in Franz Ferdinand so fun in the first place and decided to keep going. The new album, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, will finally be released tomorrow, but you can already hear its lead single, “Right Action,” right here only on 88.9 WERS!
