Artist of the Week: Valerie June

Valerie_JuneThis week WERS is featuring singer-songwriter Valerie June as our Artist of the Week!

Valerie June grew up in Tennessee while attending a church where the entire congregation sang hymns together, helping June develop a strikingly unique voice and lyrical delivery of her own. After high school June tried her hand at singing in a band, but a clash of egos and creative differences led her to pursue a solo career instead. From there she began self-releasing her own material and integrating herself in the local music scene until she inevitably attracted high-profile listeners such as Old Crow Medicine Show and producer Kevin Augunas (Edward Sharpe, Florence + The Machine, The Lumineers). In fact, Augunas was so impressed with June’s music at first listen that he flew to Tennessee to meet her and quickly connected her with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. June and Auerbach immediately felt a connection when they began writing songs together, and Auerbach even invited June to record a proper album at his soon-to-be-completed Easy Eye Studio in Nashville.

The resulting album became Valerie June’s new debut album, Pushin’ Against a Stone. Explaining the album’s title, June says, “I feel like my whole life I’ve always had a stone I’ve been pushing…Some days it’s a good thing to have, like a best friend, and sometimes it’s your worst enemy. In the case of this record, I had so many friends helping me move the stone.” The new album was just released last week, and you can already hear it’s infectious, roots-driven lead single, “You Can’t Be Told”, right here only on 88.9 WERS!
