Riddims Watch: Hello Carol

The Hello Carol riddim is a brand new rootsy riddim out on Fireball Records. This riddim heavily samples the song “Hello Carol” by reggae legends The Gladiators, giving acknowledgement to the classics while updating the tune for a new generation. The combination of the rolling roots groove mixed with the more modern dancehall oriented vocals create a pleasing mix of old and new, relaxed and aggressive. The vocal melodies manage to weave in and out of the chord structure and eventually hit the classic chorus taken from the original song, creating a great effect on the track. The production also has some interesting dubbed out technical choices that add some interesting textures to the tune that weren’t present on the original. I wouldn’t really single this out to be a banging club hit but I do think that fans of old reggae and new stuff alike could be won over by this tune. As a huge Gladiators fan, I was definitely intrigued and pleased by DJ Tek’s version on such a great song. Listen to it here.
