Artist of the Week: Kings of Leon

kings of leonThis week WERS is featuring Grammy Award winners Kings of Leon as our Artist of the Week!

Kings of Leon is a family affair formed by three Followill brothers, Caleb, Nathan, and Jared,  in 2000. The brothers grew up traveling through America with their Pentecostal, evangelist father until he left preaching behind and divorced his wife in 1997. Caleb, Nathan and Jared soon moved to Nashville and immersed themselves in the southern rock sound and lifestyle their father had sheltered them from. Within a year of adding their cousin, guitarist Matthew Followell, to the band’s line-up, Kings of Leon were signed to the RCA label and later released their debut album, Youth & Young Manhood, in 2003. Although the band initially gained traction for their Dixie Land-inspired take on rock and roll the band eventually progressed toward more experimental sounds with each passing album.

By the time they released their fourth album, 2008′s Only By the Night, Kings of Leon had become a household name. Only By the Night was a huge commercial and critical success that spawned two Platinum-certified hits (“Sex On Fire” and “Use Somebody”), went multi-Platinum in eight different countries including the United States, and was awarded three Grammy Awards including Record of the Year for “Use Somebody,” as well as the Best International Album Award at the BRIT, Meteor and Juno Awards. After an extensive international arena tour that included headlining spots at festivals like Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, Kings of Leon followed up Only By the Night with 2010′s Come Around Sundown. Now Kings of Leon have a sixth new album under their belt, titled Michanical Bull, which the band says will have a more fun and light-hearted sound then their previous releases and is due out September 24. Although you can already hear the lead single “Super Soaker” right here on WERS!
