This Week in Music History: August 4th-10th

The Beatles Abbey RoadAs the rain falls from the Boston sky, let’s take a look back at this week in music history and hope for the sun!

On August 8th, 1969 an icon that has last decades was created.  On this day photographer Iain McMillan took photos of the Beatles as they crossed Abbey Road.  A police officer held up traffic while McMillan took 6 photographs of the band as they walked over the crosswalk.  The selected photo was used as the cover of their 11th studio album, Abbey Road, from 1969.  The band went back to the studio after the photo shoot to put in more work for a few tracks, including “The End” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).”

Twenty-seven years ago today, Queen performed at Knebworth Park in England.  Although not known at the time, this would be Queen’s last live performance ever.  They continued to make music, though, and released another three albums, A Kind of Magic, The Miracle, and Innuendo before Freddie Mercury passed away in 1991.  Queen released a final album four years after his death, Made In Heaven, which included music that Mercury worked on.

Earlier in the week, on August 6th, we celebrated the beloved indie singer-songwriter Elliott Smith’s birthday.  Born in 1969, Smith had an impressive career that ended all too soon when he died in 2003 at the age of 34.  Smith released 6 albums, starting with 1994’s Roman Candle.  Some of his most loved songs include “Needle In the Hay,” “Between the Bars,” “Waltz #2 (XO),” and “Somebody That I Used To Know.”
