“Ooops, I Did It Again” is a song we are used to hearing from pop star Britney Spears. Unfortunately for Toni Braxton, now she is the one singing this tune without excitement or back up dancers. What did Toni do? She has filed for bankruptcy, for the second time, loosing rights to 27 songs in her catalog.
Over the span of her career, Toni Braxton has accomplished a lot. She is a six-time Grammy award winning R&B singer and reality star who has also won numerous awards and accolades for her music. Braxton has sold over 66 million albums. However, she did not build up such a reputation by staying in the studio recording hits. She’s also starred on Broadway, playing the lead role as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She danced her way into the 5th round on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Braxton also headlined in Vegas with her own show, Toni Braxton: Revealed; replacing Wayne Newton at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino. The Vegas show was a triumph not only for Braxton, but for all African-American performers, as she was the first African-American to headline on the Vegas strip. You would believe, based on all that she has done, Toni Braxton would be very well off. Well, it doesn’t always happen that way.
Braxton first filed for bankruptcy in 1998. Many believed it was due to overspending in order to support her lavish lifestyle. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Winfrey say to her, “….’I hear you have Gucci flatware; I’m Oprah Winfrey and I don’t have Gucci flatware.” This comment didn’t sit well with Braxton, but she has admitted to splurging on her home décor during this time. However, Braxton also says she put up a lot of her own money to finance her Vegas shows. The second bankruptcy claim was filed in 2010. Braxton claimed debts up to $50,000,000. TMZ reported that “Braxton made a deal with the trustee to buy back some of the personal property she lost. The deal was for Braxton to pay $5,000/month for 15 months with the last payment being $50,000. Braxton made all the payments … except for that last one.” The final piece of the agreement gave Braxton the option to buy back the copyright to a number of songs in her catalog for $20, 000, unless she was outbid, and she was. Braxton was outbid by a man named Ross Klein. Klein doubled Braxton’s bid and was able to walk away with the rights to 27 songs.
Braxton has also recently divorced from her husband, singer Keri Lewis. It seems as if things are just going downhill for the R&B diva. Luckily for Toni Braxton, no one can take away her beautiful and sultry voice. It was her singing voice that got her discovered while she was pumping gas into her car over 20 years ago. Plus, the divorce is said to have been amicable. Toni Braxton has begun doing private shows, plus her reality show, Braxton Family Values, is now in its 3rd season, therefore I’m sure we haven’t heard the last from this very talented and resourceful woman.
