Throwback Thursday: The Edge of U2

The Edge U2This week for Throwback Thursday, WERS is playing a set of U2 to celebrate the 52nd birthday of their guitarist The Edge!

David Howell Evans, better known by his stage name The Edge, was born in 1961 in London, England. Edge was raised in Ireland and attended the Mount Temple Comprehensive School. It is here in 1976 where a group of thirteen and fourteen year old boys came together in one of their mothers’ kitchen to form a band that would later go on sell more than 150 million albums worldwide. Within four years and multiple name changes, U2 was signed to Island Records and released their debut album Boy. The band rose to become a popular international band gaining more success through touring than record sales. The band finally broke into stardom with their 1987 album The Joshua Tree which was co-produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. The Joshua Tree went on to win Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988. After a few years, the group decided to reinvent themselves with the 1991 hit album Achtung Baby. The album included more influence from alternative rock, industrial music, and a bit of electronic make the overall album more darker than their previous six albums. After twelve albums U2 are among the all-time best-selling music artists, have won 22 Grammy Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. The Edge’s delayed guitar effects and Bono’s unparalleled vocals are one of the greatest pairings in music.
