MGMT have been relatively missing in action since frontman Andrew VanWyngarden announced he had about five songs written and they had begun recording in January of 2012. The band has been sporadically playing shows through out the US since then. Their song “Alien Days” was released this past April 20th and their self-titled album is scheduled for release on September 17, 2013.
The psychedelic, indie pop duo made up of Ben Goldwasser and VanWyngarden took the music world by storm in 2007 with their break out album, Oracular Spectacular, which Rolling Stone named one of the top 100 albums of the 2000s.
This week, the band put out a music video for their song “Your Life Is a Lie”. The video is barely over two minutes long, but it is full manic, quick cuts and features a variety bizarre imagery, like a skeleton chorus and a lizard crawling out of a mouth. “Your Life Is a Lie” was directed by Tom Kuntz, who also responsible for the “Congratulations” music video. The video is composed of “found-footage” and pokes fun at the absurdities of life; it even looks like Henry Winkler makes a guest appearance.
For a band that went so far out of their way to make their sophomore album as weird and indigestible as possible, they sure have returned to a style that is more palatable that Congratulations. The track “Your Life Is a Lie” can be described as garage rock meets outer space, like a fusion of the two sounds channeled on their first two albums. Check out the video above.
