Artist of the Week: The Civil Wars

The Civil WarsThis week WERS is featuring folk duo The Civil Wars as our Artist of the Week!

Joy Williams and John Paul White began writing music together as The Civil Wars after meeting at a Nashville songwriting session in 2008. The name signifies Williams and White’s very different backgrounds and how they often argued with each other when writing music, yet these disagreements gave the Civil Wars a level of chemistry most musical duos can only dream of. In 2009 they released a free live EP that has been downloaded over 500,000 times and continued to build buzz from there on. Then in 2011 The Civil Wars released their debut full-length, Barton Hollow, to much critical and commercial acclaim. Barton Hollow was included in numerous Best Albums of 2011 lists from publications like Rolling Stone, The Huffington Post, All Music and The Wall Street Journal, peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart, has been certified Gold by the RIAA and won two Grammy Awards.

However, there was trouble in paradise as tensions began running high between Williams and White in the year that followed. Eventually it was too much for them to handle, so last November The Civil Wars announced that they were going there separate ways. Though not before The Civil Wars finished recording one more album with Barton Hollow producer Charlie Peacock (The Lone Bellow, Amy Grant, Switchfoot). Now the Civil Wars’ long anticipated self-titled sophomore album is almost here, with The Civil Wars coming out tomorrow, but you can already hear the album’s lead single, “The One That Got Away,” on 88.9 WERS!
