Artist of the Week: Jason Isbell

Jason IsbellWERS is featuring Alabama-based singer-songwriter Jason Isbell as our Artist of the Week!

Jason Isbell first played music professionally as a member of Drive-By Truckers in 2001. Over the next six years Isbell recorded three albums with Drive-By Truckers including Decoration Day (2003), of which he wrote the title track. Then, in April 2007, Isbell officially announced he was leaving Drive-By Truckers to pursue a solo career, and released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, a mere three months later. He soon began touring with a new backing band called the 400 Unit and released a self-titled album as Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit in 2009. After taking the next year off and returning home in northern Alabama, he wrote a set of songs inspired by the less fortunate members of the area. These songs led to the critically acclaimed 2011 album, Here We Rest.

Now the 400 Unit is taking a break as Jason Isbell recorded his fourth and newest album, Southeastern, on his own. The album was released just last month and features the lead single “Stockholm,” which you can already hear on WERS. This past Saturday Isbell played a set at the Newport Folk Festival in promotion of the album and will play at the Sinclair in Cambridge tonight. He’s also going to perform a live, in-studio session with us around 3:15pm today, so make sure to tune in only on 88.9 WERS!
