Artist of the Week: Mikal Cronin

Mikal CroninWERS is featuring Garage Rock Singer-Songwriter Mikal Cronin as our Artist of the Week!

Since 2005 Mikal Cronin has played in such San Fransico Garage Rock bands as Epsilons, Moonhearts, Okie Dokie and Party Fowl. Cronin has also worked with Ty Segall on numerous occasions, including various live tours and on the collaborative 2009 album Reverse Shark Attack. Eventually Cronin decided to branch out on his own when he released his self-titled debut solo album in 2011 around the same time he finished college. Right off the bat Mikal Cronin was so well-received that Uncut named it one of their “Top 50 Albums of 2011.” Even the folks at Merge Records, who already had an impressive artist roster featuring Arcade Fire, Shout Out Louds, and Divine Fits, were impressed enough with the album to invite Mikal Cronin to play at the indie label’s South By South West showcase the following year. The label then released Cronin’s sophomore release, MCII, earlier this year to an even greater degree of critical acclaim. It earned high marks from a variety of publications including SpinMojoConsequence of Sound and Pitchfork, and led to a guest performance on Conan just last week. WIth MCII Cronin has progressed beyond Ty Segall’s shadow and is establishing himself as a one-man force to be reckoned with. You’ll understand why when you hear his new song “Weight” only on 88.9 WERS!
