Artist of the Week: Lorde

LordeWERS is featuring 16-year-old New Zealand singer Ella Yelich O’Connor, better known as Lorde, as our Artist of the Week!

Having been signed to Universal Music at the even more tender age of 13, Lorde’s music has already become a smash success back home and is starting to make rounds here in America. Last March, Lorde’s infectious first single “Royals” debuted at No. 1 on the New Zealand singles charts, spent three straight weeks at the top, and has been certified double platinum in the country. All while she’s still attending grammer school! The song (as well as Lorde’s stage name) was inspired by an obsession with royalty, aristocracy, and historic drama that she had since she was little and likens to her current fascination with celebrity culture. This has lead some listeners to interpret “Royals” as a critique of the kind of frivolous consumption glorified in the Rap songs that influenced the song’s Hip-Hop-style beat.

Today Lorde is spending much of her time in the studio writing and recording songs for her debut album. Sometimes she spends as much as 10 to 12 hours per day or 50 to 60 hours per week. No release date has been confirmed yet, and Lorde has only played a five live shows so far, but Lorde is already making plans to stop by the states this Fall. Wonder if those concerts will sell out as fast as all the others?
