Artist of the Week: Daft Punk

The masked French duo, consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, first began recording as Daft Punk after their previous band, Darlin’, received a negative review in which their music was described as, “a dafty punk trash.” Daft Punk adopted the critics words and later proved him wrong when they rose to prominence during the House music craze of the late 1990s with their debut album Homework. Since then they’ve established them selves as Electronica legends, having influenced a plethora of EDM artists without restricting themselves to the EDM model. This is especially the case with their latest album, Random Access Memories.

Random Access Memories is a solid tribute to the music of the 1970s and 1980s and even music making itself. RAM saw Daft Punk recording with live instrumentation and a variety of collaborators including Animal Collective’s Panda Bear, The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, and even Pharell Williams. With this new direction, Daft Punk took plenty of risks that have paid off big time as the album has achieved critical acclaim and remained at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for two weeks straight. RAM‘s lead single, “Get Lucky”, is also a major frontunner for Song of the Summer with Nile Rodgers’ Disco-driven guitar riffs and Pharell William’s uncharacteristically butch vocals. And now you can finally hear “Get Lucky” on the airwaves of 88.9 WERS!
