If this rainy weather is bringing you down, there is a place that you can throw beach balls around, laugh and sing, as well as have a great time! American Repertory Theater is presenting Pirates of Penzance until June 2nd! This performance is honestly one of a kind, not following standard theatrical performances and allowing audiences to not only sit on stage but interact with the cast during the performance!
This 80 minute performance is brought to you by The Hypocrites all the way from Chicago has many costume changes, a 1 minute intermission, amazing songs, and is a show for all ages! This is the third year that this cast has performed Pirates of Penzance and always want the audience to participate! Instruments have no limits during this performance; they play everything from a saw, spoons, to ukuleles. There is a variety of places to sit in the theater, you can choose to sit in a chair or if you want to get up close and personal you are allowed to sit on coolers, the pier, in small pools, just about anywhere your heart desires. WARNING, you may have to get up and move a couple of times if you sit on the stage, however you will be told in advance with a point, a tap on the shoulder or verbally told! Being able to sit on stage adds a whole other view to the performance.
I was able to get most of the cast here in studio for an interview and in-studio performance (Matt Kahler, Shawn Pfaustch, Doug Pawlik, Ryan Bourque, Dana Omar, Emily Casey, and Kate Carson-Groner). I can honestly say, they are just as amazing close up! The cast is a lively group that loves to have fun! They were dancing away in studio, making faces, and battling over who has the best cat impression. All of them love their role and show it! They are passionate about their work and feed off of others energy. We talked about how the interaction between the audience allows them to have a better time due to the fact that every night is different. They also love to see the audience sing a long, they have seen a 7 year old to a 70 year old sit down and sing every song! So do not be afraid to jam out to your favorite!
If you are ready to get hit in the head by a beach ball or have a drink and sit down on stage with the cast Pirates of Penzance will have you going and laughing throughout the night, it will even have you singing the songs until the next day! Click here to learn more, they will be performing at the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge until June 2nd! It is definitely great fun for the whole family!
