Artist of the Week: Jesse Dee

Jesse DeeWERS is featuring Boston’s own Jesse Dee as our Artist of the Week!

Jesse Dee was born in Boston in 1980 and raised in Arlington. He was first drawn to Soul music at the tender age of eight-years-old after hearing singers like Sam Cooke and Smokey Robinson on a local oldies radio station. This sparked a passion for singing that eventually led him to join in his church choir and school theatre productions. After spending the early 2000s singing with The Dirty Whites, he formed his own group and released his solo debut, Bittersweet Batch, in 2008. The album, and the live shows that followed, received so much acclaim that it earned him the 2010 Boston Phoenix Music Poll Award for Best R&B Act. In the two years between releasing Bittersweet Batch and receiving this award, Jesse Dee was able to spread his Soul sound across America by performing in cities like New York City and Washington, DC, and even overseas in the UK and Italy. His singing soon brought him full circle when he began sharing stages with Etta James, Al Green, and some of the other Soul and R&B legends he idolized as a child.

Jesse Dee just released his second album, On My Mind/In My Heart, this past February. With an impressive backing band that includes trombonist Jeff Galindo (Ray Charles), horn brothers Scott and John Aruda (The Temptations and Superhoney, respectively), and saxophonist Paul Ahlstrand (Eddie Floyd), Jesse Dee described the album as, “a testament to the local crop of musicians here in Boston.” Dee will also open for the James Hunter Six at the Sinclair this Wednesday, May 28 (a show that was rescheduled from February 29), and perform at the Levitate Music Festival in Marshfield on July 13.
