On Sunday, May 19th, the famous Billboard Music Awards occurred at MGM Grand where they honored musicians across the board in a variety of categories—the biggest winner of last night’s award was Taylor Swift, who (somehow) managed to take home an astounding eleven trophies. Of course, the BMA differs from the Grammy Awards, which is chosen based off a voting system, as the Billboard Music Awards select winners based off of the United States’ year-end chart performance, looking at numbers for sales, downloads, and airplay time. Swift took home awards such as Top Artist, where she beat out the likes of Justin Bieber, Maroon 5, One Direction, and Rihanna, as well as Top Female Artist (beating even Adele), Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Country Artist, and more. She also won for Top Billboard 200 Album with her most recent release, Red.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the awards show, the indie music scene was grossly underrepresented, but there were alternative musicians maintaining a presence. The Lumineers and Gotye were both nominated for Best New Artist (only for boy band sensation One Direction to win), and Coldplay, fun., and Mumford & Sons were all up for Top Duo/Group (again losing to One Direction). fun. was up for a number of categories last night, including Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, and many, many more. They took home the honor of Top Rock Artist, beating the other nominees of Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, Gotye, and Mumford & Sons. Although fun. had both “Some Nights” and “We Are Young” nominated and the Top Rock Song category, the song that was unavoidable in 2012, “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye Featuring Kimbra took home that honor. The Top Rock Album category included nominations for Of Monsters and Men, Phillip Phillips, The Lumineers, and fun., but Mumford & Sons won for Babel.
Other big winners of the night included Justin Bieber for Top Male Artist, Maroon 5 for Top 100 Hot Artist, Madonna for Top Touring Artist, and Rihanna for Top Radio Songs Artist.
