Throwback Thursday: Peter Gabriel

peter-gabrielFor this week’s Throwback Thursday, WERS is celebrating Peter Gabriel in honor of the 27th anniversary of his hit album So.

English singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel is most well known as the lead singer and flutist for progressive rock legend – Genesis. Gabriel was one of Genesis’ founding members back in 1967 with a few of his classmates. Once the band got started, Gabriel quickly earned a reputation for his notably flamboyant stage presence and he stayed with Genesis for eight years. After releasing six albums with Genesis, Gabriel decided it was time for a change. In 1975 he announced his departure from the band and launched a solo career.

His first solo album was released within one short year, and Gabriel’s solo debut took off with his hit single, “Solsbury Hill.” The track was particularly personal for Gabriel as he wrote it about his recent departure from Genesis. Over the next few years, Gabriel released three more self-titled albums including the one we are celebrating today. So is marked as his most successful solo album as it holds big songs like “Red Rain,” “In Your Eyes,” and “Sledgehammer.” These tracks, combined with Gabriel’s popular reputation, led So to go triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the United States.

Celebrate Peter Gabriel with us today at 5pm on 88.9 WERS!
