Sigur Rós Previews New Music

simpsonsFans of the wildly-popular Icelandic band Sigur Rós will be pleased to hear that there is more wondrous new music on the way.  Sigur Rós has already announced that their newest album, Kveikur, is scheduled to be released mid-June and have shared two songs from the upcoming album on their website (“Brennisteinn” and “Isjaki”).  Two songs is only two songs and June is still far away, but before anyone falls too deeply into their  Sigur Rós-deprived depression: wait!  There is good news for those are dying to get their hands on some brand-new mystical, magical ambiance.  You can hear new Sigur Rós a lot sooner—on May 19th.

On an episode of “The Simpsons.”

Yes, it’s true.  Like countless musicians before them, the members of Sigur Rós  will find themselves animated in the likeliness of the “The Simpsons” for an upcoming episode named “The Saga of Carl.”  Of course, the important part is that not only are they appearing in the episode but have also scored parts of it, the new music written exclusively for their appearance.  According to their website, the band will also be presenting their own take on iconic opening theme song of “The Simpsons.”

It’s a strange and surprising combination considering the differences in mood (and, one would think, audience) between these two entities– Sigur Rós, the serious, thoughtful, and subtle ambiance juxtaposed with brash, loud, and downright silly entertainment provided by “The Simpsons,” but apparently the collaboration has gone swimmingly and will be something to look forward to.  According to the Sigur Rós website, the band’s contribution of scoring to the episode has of sound to the episode has marked “an unprecedented musical collaboration between the show and a band; with this episode, Sigur Rós have written and performed more original music for “The Simpsons” than any other outside band in the show’s history.”
