Don’t let the name fool you. Boy is actually a female duo featuring Swiss singer Valeska Steiner and German bassist Sonja Glass, who met each other while taking a pop-music class at Hamburg in 2005. Because they had each had other musical projects going on in their respective countries, it took them another two-and-a-half years to start collaborating together as Boy.
They released their debut album Mutual Friends in 2011 and became a quick top 10 hit in both members’ home countries. It earned them the Hamburg Musician Prize HANS that same year and the European Border Breakers Award (EBBA) the following year after its rerelease in the UK. Now Boy have introduced themselves to an overseas audience with the North American release of Mutual Friends this past February. In the three months since then Boy have already started making splashes with their infectious debut single “Little Numbers” and are currently in the middle of their first ever US/ Canada tour. The tour will end with a stop at the Red Room in Boston on May 17th.
As Boy continues to rise as one of the scene’s most promising acts, they continue to draw comparison to established acts like Phoenix, Feist, and Bon Iver for their unique brand of toe-tapping indie pop. They’ve left a trail of sold-out venues and new fans behind them while emerging on our side of the globe, and confusing title or not, we’re sure glad these ladies are pushing boundaries and getting us dancing.
