This Saturday, April 20th is Record Store Day! For the past six years, Record Store Day has been celebrated every third Saturday in April. It is a day to celebrate the music, art, and culture that gravitate around the independent record stores throughout the country, and internationally. A group of new and exclusive vinyl, CD, DVD, etc., are released in a a limited number in record stores every year.
Every Record Store Day also has an official ‘ambassador.’ This began with the boys from Metallica in 2008, and has been passed on to the likes of Ozzy Osborne, Josh Homme, and Iggy Pop over the past few years. This year’s official ambassador is Jack White. As a part of Record Store Day, his band The White Stripes will reissue a 10th anniversary edition LP of their album Elephant.
The reissue of Elephant is just one of many releases to look forward to on Saturday. Artists such as David Bowie, Best Coast, Brendan Benson, Iron & Wine, Ben Harper, MGMT, Willie Nelson, and plenty more will also be dropping exclusive releases.
Record Store Day is also noted as a day for artists and independent stores to come together. At many locations, bands and artists will be performing throughout the day. Lone Bellow will be performing at the Newbuy Comics in Faneuil Hall, Boston, MA at 4:00 pm on Saturday. You can check out your local record store for more information on that day’s events!
