Vampire Weekend was one of the dozens of great acts at South By Southwest this year and put on a great performance. With so many acts it is easy to miss one of the more outstanding events. We haven’t heard much from Vampire Weekend since their 2010 release of Contra, but the band’s third album, Modern Vampires of the City, is set to be released on May 6th.
Vampire Weekend chose to release not one, but two new songs off of the upcoming album on March 18th. Both of the songs were uploaded to Youtube and were accompanied with odd visuals. The first single “Diane Young” has just a burning car in the background as the song plays. “Diane Young” shows a more powerful pop side to the band with an extremely catchy hook and a driving rhythm.
The other released song, “Step” is a longer tune and more along the lines of earlier Vampire Weekend material. “Step” is a drastic contrast to “Diane Young” and I really think this an impressive move on the part of Vampire Weekend to release two great new songs on the same day from an album that will not be released for two months. This video shows different locations around the bands home town of NYC and has the lyrics of the song pop up on the screen. These releases make me extremely excited for the new material Vampire Weekend is going to release on Modern Vampires of the City on May 6th.
