Artist of the Week: Frank Turner

Frank TurnerThis week WERS is featuring English folk-punker Frank Turner as our Artist of the Week!

Frank Turner was not always solo.  He first rose to prominence in the early 00′s with the post-hardcore band Million Dead.  After that band’s split, however, Turner went in a different direction.  Influenced by Johnny Cash’s excellent American series (with Rick Rubin), Turner picked up an acoustic guitar and began his solo career after Million Dead’s 2005 split.

And what a career it’s been.  By himself and with his live band The Sleeping Souls he’s made a name for himself first by playing festivals in his native UK and then world-wide tours and has won “Best Live Act” awards from various publications and has shared the stage with Boston natives The Dropkick Murphy’s.  His fifth studio album, Tape Deck Heart, is set to be released April 23rd.  Turner and The Sleeping Souls have a busy summer to look forward to.  They seem booked solid with dates all over the world but with just one appearance stateside – the Newport Folk Festival – hopefully they can squeeze in a few more shows in the States to their schedule.
