Macklemore on Saturday Night Live

Macklemore SNLIn the past year, Seattle rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis have blown up to superstar status in hip-hop. The two released their debut album The Heist in October of 2012 and after only a few hours it reached number 1 on iTunes. The whole album was independently produced, supported, and marketed by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis making their success that more impressive. Since then the power group have made music videos for their popular songs “Thrift Shop”, the same-sex marriage anthem “Same Love” and made television appearances on talk shows like Ellen. I kept asking myself why the two had not yet performed on Saturday Night Live, but finally I got my wish. This past Saturday, March second, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were the musical guest on SNL with host Kevin Hart.

The Seattle duo donned some outlandish outfits made up of fur, fringe, and leather to perform their ode to second-and clothing “Thrift Shop.” They had vocalist Wanz to sing the chorus and both of the songs had accompaniment from a six piece horn section. Macklemore was extremely energetic while performing and seemed to be having the time of his life. The second song was “Can’t Hold Us” featuring Ray Dalton, one of my favorite songs off of the album. Again Macklemore had a great energy and control of the stage and crowd. There was a lot of jumping, dancing, and especially smiling from the Seattle duo.
