In has been a somewhat quiet three years since Joanna Newsom released her last album, Have One on Me, back in 2010. Since The Milk-Eyed Mender, her 2004 debut, Newsom has pushed the boundaries of harpist commercial success with her three albums selling over a total of five hundred thousand copies in America alone.
Each release saw her musically expanding, with long and complex compositions that has won her tons of critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. Now 2013 is looking to be somewhat of a comeback year in a very odd way. Late last year at San Fransisco’s Treasure Island Music Festival, Newsom premiered a new song entitled “Look and Despair”.
A few days ago, she released a cover of Sandy Denny’s “The Northstar Grassman and the Ravens” complete with a beautiful video. It has also been announced that she will be playing Pitchfork’s Music Festival along with acts as varied as Bjork, Belle and Sebastian, Killer Mike, and The Breeders.
However, the biggest news of the year so far is her engagement to previous Saturday Night Live cast member, funny man Andy Samberg. According to US Weekly, the tow have been dating for the past five years and have finally decided to tie the knot. Allegedly, Samberg was a huge fan before the two met, and would frequently attend her concerts.
Hopefully this wont put a damper on any plans for new music, as the aforementioned new song sounds fantastic and fans have been patiently waiting for new material. For future news on Joanna Newsom, keep checking WERS.
