Chicago has Lollapalooza. New York has The Governors Ball. San Francisco has Outside Lands. Now, Boston has Boston Calling. The two day festival, announced earlier this week, will take place on May 25 and 26 (the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend).) But where can a large music festival be held in Boston? The promoter, and the city, have agreed on the location to be City Hall Plaza. Now, a resident of Boston (or any person who has ever been to Boston) can tell you that City Hall Plaza is not that big a space. So what type of festival is this going to be?
Well, it’s much smaller than any major festival in the U.S. but larger than any single show Boston has put on. Spanning the two days, there are 18 bands playing (9 each day). Headlining the festival are Fun. and The National. Other notable bands playing include The Shins (who could/should be headlining), Of Monsters and Men, Marina and the Diamonds, Young the Giant, Matt and Kim, Andrew Bird, Portugal. The Man, Dirty Projectors, and Ra Ra Riot. Pretty solid lineup for a first year festival.
Tickets went on sale Friday morning and the festival has been abuzz on social media as well as on the media outlets in Boston. This inaugural festival will hopefully bring to light the vibrant music scene of Boston as well as set a precedent for a major music festival in Boston.
