David Bowie’s highly anticipated return with The Next Day, might not be released in the U.S until March 12th, but he has shared a second single, “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” with a Floria Sigismondi directed video.
Bowie has worked with Floria in the past, but this time around, some nostalgia was brought to the forefront. As Bowie and his wife, played by Tilda Swinton try to live out a happy suburban lifestyle, they encounter two countering characters, one looking an awful like Bowie during the Low/The Man Who Fell To Earth days.
As the video plays up a precise theatric appeal to demonstrate a specific feeling towards the past, it is hard not to think of what the overarching theme of ‘The Next Day’ could be.
This video has also come at an interesting time in Bowie’s career. Fans are waiting for this comeback of an album after 10 years of no recordings, but the news of The Next Day led to more expectations from Bowie. People expect promotional interviews and a tour in which Bowie has said that he rather not participate in. Now, things such as this video, are held so precious. Just to see Bowie make an appearance and act is a thrill for a musician releasing so little promotional material. In an age of the music industry that demands as much material as possible, it is refreshing to see an artist take charge of his artistic freedom.
