Artist of the Week: The Postal Service

The Postal ServiceThis week WERS is featuring The Postal Service as our Artist of the Week.  The band was formed when Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) lent some vocals to Jimmy Tamborello’s (AKA Dntel) album Life Is Full of Possibilities.  This led to them making an EP of remixes which in turn led them to the decision to create The Postal Service.  The name is informed by the band’s recording methods – Tamborello would record the instrumental tracks and then send them to Gibbard, who would add his vocals and do some editing and then would send songs back to Tamborello using the real (United States) Postal Service.  As a fill in for vocals on Tamborello’s tracks that he would send to Gibbard, he used his neighbor Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley.  Anytime Jenny Lewis lives in your building, you probably have to at least ask.  Eventually, Lewis became a full member of the band for live shows.  In 2003 they released Give Up to critical acclaim and the album would eventually be included on several year and decade-end lists.

In January of this year, the band announced that a 10th anniversary edition of Give Up, with a 15 song rarity disc including two newly recorded songs with Jenny Lewis, would be released.  The next month (hey, that’s this one!) a world tour was announced, finally ending the seemingly annual tradition of rumors that they would reunite for shows.  I think the trade off is worth it.  I apologize for this sentence: neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night will stop The Postal Service from performing at the Bank of America Pavilion on June 12th.  Although I’m sure it’s possible something might come up, so don’t blame us if that happens.
