Throwback Thursday: Valentine’s Day “Respect”

Aretha FranklinFor this week’s Throwback Thursday we are playing a set of love songs from Aretha Franklin to celebrate both Valentine’s Day and the 46th anniversary of her recording of “Respect.”

“Respect” was originally written and recorded by Otis Redding in 1965, but it’s very easy to forget that when you consider the impact Aretha Franklin left after recording her own version of the song two years later. Like Redding’s recording of “Try a Little Tenderness,” Franklin’s recording of “Respect” blew the original out of the water with a commanding voice that announced the Queen of Soul had arrived. It also helped that Franklin had strong backing support from her sisters Carolyn and Erma, who delivered the endemic “Sock it to me” line, and the iconic Muscle Shoals rhythm section. The song was so powerful that it quickly climbed to the top of the Pop and R&B charts, making it Franklin’s first number one pop single and the second of an astonishing string of number one R&B singles, and it soon became a rallying cry for the feminist and civil rights movements as well. From there the recording went on to win two Grammys (the first of 18 for Franklin), receive an induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and nab the number 5 spot in Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Celebrate a lifetime of “Respect” for Aretha Franklin with us today at 5PM at WERS!
