Artist of the Week: Depeche Mode

This week WERS is featuring the legendary Depeche Mode as our Artist of the Week.  The English band, now primarily a trio, formed in 1980.  Since then, they’ve experienced what is likely the most successful career ever for an electronic band.  With nearly 50 songs to chart in the U.K., 12 albums to hit the top 10 in their home country, and over 100 million albums/singles sold worldwide, it wouldn’t be difficult to make that case.

It’s not the band’s storied history that makes them our choice for Artist of the Week, however. In December the band announced that they’d have a new album – their thirteenth – coming out in March 2013.  And, so, the countdown to the release of Delta Machine began in earnest here at WERS.  The band recorded the album at Martin Gore’s own studio in California and in New York.  The recently released first single from it, “Heaven,” has the distinction of being Depeche Mode’s 50th U.K. single (and also that of being a very, very good song).  The full album will be out on March 22nd.

This summer, the band will be embarking on a world tour which, despite only having the European leg announced so far, will hopefully include Boston.
