This week WERS is featuring New York City natives fun. as our honorary Artist of the Week. This American indie rock band comprised of members of The Format, Anathallo, and Steel Train blew up in 2012. The trio – Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost, and Jack Antonoff release a debut album together as fun. in 2009 called Aim and Ignite.
Yet it was the band’s sophomore follow up Some Nights that came out in February of 2012 that really put fun. on the map. With several hit singles like the ever popular “We Are Young” featuring Janelle Monáe, “Some Nights,” and “Carry On” all of which have been in rotation at WERS since Some Nights dropped.
“We Are Young” is the bands biggest song to date, landing the number one spot on multiple charts internationally including the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. As if that wasn’t enough for one year, fun. was nominated for six Grammy Awards this year including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “We Are Young”, Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for “Some Nights.” The band has also been asked to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony.
The band is currently on tour throughout the United States and will be visiting Boston at the Orpheum Theater downtown to a sold out crowd this Friday evening. Appearing on the bill alongside fun. on this tour is a solo Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin).
