Canadian indie rock duo Tegan and Sara are this week’s Artist of the Week here at WERS. Hailing from Calgary, the duo is comprised of identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin. Both sisters play guitar, keyboards, sing, and write the music together.
Tegan and Sara began writing music together at age 15 when they formed their first band called Plunk. As Plunk they wrote and recorded two demo albums and won a garage band competition in their hometown. A few years later the two decided to change their name to “Sara and Tegan” but soon flipped the order to “Tegan and Sara” because it was easier to pronounce.
In 2000, Neil Young’s manager signed Tegan and Sara to Vapor Records, where they released This Business of Art. Since then the two have put out seven full length albums including 2007’s The Con which led to vast success and 2009’s Sainthood that landed the sisters high critical acclaim. Spin Magazine said, “Tegan and Sara’s music may no longer be the stuff of teens, but its strength remains in how much it feels like two people talking.”
A seventh album, Heartthrob, landed the pair back in the studios early last year. Three different producers have contributed to the album including Greg Kurstin, Joey Waronker, Mike Elizondo, and Justin Meldal-Johnsen. The album is set to release at the end of this month on Jan. 29. The first single from the album was released in September entitled “Closer.”
Tegan and Sara will be in Boston this weekend performing a special show at the Brighton Music Hall on January 27th presented by Fenway Recording Sessions.
