This week, we’re honing in on LA up-and-comers Youngblood Hawke, a duo who swiped their group’s name from a Herman Wouk novel. Not hip enough for you? The band can already credit themselves as a Starbucks Pick of the Week with single “Forever”, residency at The Satellite in LA, and significant play at this past year’s South by Southwest Festival.
Bandleaders Sam Martin and Simon Katz have previously been with other alt group Iglu and Harley, but banded together with three close friends (one of them Katz’s sister Alice) to form an LA youth, indie sound, and were almost immediately signed to Universal Records to produce their self-titled EP. The leading single “We Come Running” is the epitome of the maximalist pop sound Youngblood Hawke is already making its signature stamp, with a music video featuring the band playing music and scuba diving with sharks. Just for fun? Nope, the band has spoken publicly about their strong support of shark conservation, and hope the video will help the cause.
Youngblood Hawke is spending the remainder of 2012 and early days of the new year touring the west coast and mid-west, as well as (we hope) continuing to climb the alt rock and tastemaker charts. If their EP is any indication, we have a lot of fun music to look forward to from this group, and if their 2013 is anywhere near as impressive as their past one has been there’s much more to come.
