The Artist Of The Week is WERS favorite, Mike Doughty! Doughty first rose to prominence as the leader of the 90s alt-rock band, Soul Coughing and since then has had a fruitful career as a solo artist. Last month he released an all-covers album, The Flip Is Another Honey.
Doughty was born on June 10, 1970 in Fort Knox, Kentucky. His father was in the military and therefore the family lived in several different places in the United States and Europe. He attended Bard College and later The New School in New York City. In 1992, he formed Soul Coughing with Mark Degli Antoni (keys, sampler), Sebastian Steinberg (bass) and Yuval Gabay (drums). Together they released three records: Ruby Vroom (1994), Irresistible Bliss (1996) and El Oso (1998). Notable Soul Coughing songs include “Circles”, “Super Bon Bon” and “Screenwriter’s Blues”.
After Soul Coughing dissolved in 2000, Doughty embarked on a solo acoustic tour where he sold copies of a solo record, Skittish, which ended up selling 20,000 copies. In 2005, he released the record, Haughty Melodic, which contains the song “Looking At The World From The Bottom Of A Well”, on ATO Records. The follow-up records, Golden Delicious and Sad Man Happy Man, came out in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Last year, Doughty released his fourth studio record, Yes And Also Yes, on his own label, SNACK BAR. Yes And Also Yes features WERS favorites like “Na Na Nothing” and “Strike The Motion”.
Following the release of Yes And Also Yes, Doughty penned a memoir, The Book Of Drugs and released a two-disc live record, The Question Jar Show, which features acoustic songs as well as Doughty’s answers to questions that were asked by fans before the start of each show during that tour.
You can grab the latest Doughty release, The Flip Is Another Honey, now. Doughty will be appearing at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club this Friday, December 14th with The Ryan Montbleau Band. He will also be stopping by WERS on Friday at 4:15pm for an in-studio performance and interview. Doughty is fabulous live, so don’t forget to tune in!
