Massachusetts underground economy study

Following Governor Deval Patrick’s announcement on Tuesday to cut the $540 million dollar gap, he is implementing a new study to investigate Massachusetts’ underground economy. The study will focus on investigating employers who illegally misclassify their workers as independent contractors. This would save employers from paying health insurance and retirement benefits to their employees. This lost the state $11 million last year and continues to grow. (Reporter Erin Connolly)
