Mac Miller Drops a Jazz Album

Stepping far outside his comfort zone, Mac Miller recently released a free five-song jazz EP under the pseudonym Larry Lovestein. The project is called You, and finds Mac singing jazz love songs geared mainly towards a female audience. Larry Lovestein is Mac’s second alter ego, his first being Larry Fisherman, whom he credits his work behind the boards to. It is likely that Mac had a large hand in the production of You also, as Larry Lovestein is credited with Keyboards, and other production credits are given to clear pseudonyms such as “Bob ‘Grumpy’ Loveskins.”

All said, the project is surprisingly good. Granted, Mac Miller is not a natural singer, but he stays within his range, and his strength as a songwriter is apparent. The opening and closing tracks, “Life Can Wait,” and “You” are especially worth checking out. You might not warrant a if it wasn’t affiliated with the already established Mac Miller, but Mac must be respected for his willingness to experiment, and commitment to expanding his musical horizons. It’s hard to imagine another rapper releasing such a record, and it displays Mac’s interest in furthering himself as an overall musician, and not just a rapper.

Mac Miller’s second studio album, and his return to rap, Watching Movies with the Sound Off, is slated to drop in early 2013.
