Adele’s “21″ Sells 10 Million

This week, U.S. sales for Adele’s sophomore album 21 pushed beyond the 10 million mark, making it the first album to sell that many copies in less than two years since ‘N Sync’s No Strings Attached. Only seven other albums have accomplished such a feat within the same time span. It also makes 21 the 21st album (interestingly enough) to sell 10 million copies overall, thereby joining the ranks of such diamond-certified landmark albums as Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill, Santana’s Supernatural and Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory.

Such news should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed Adele’s career since 21’s debut. The album spent 24 non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard charts, spawned three No. 1 singles and earned six Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. Adele also recently released the eponymous theme song of the latest James Bond film, Skyfall. The song debuted at No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot 100 last month shortly before Adele gave birth to her first son, whom she says will be a major influence on her next album.
