State legislatures across the nation have increased oversight in how they regulate specialty pharmacies after House hearings last week in the case of a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy faulted for distributing the tainted steroids that caused a deadly meningitis outbreak in October. Some states will toughen inspections of in-state facilities and others are considering harsher license requirements for specialty drugs brought in from out-of-state facilities. Testifying at the hearings, an FDA representative brought up increased federal oversight, although there has been no formal proposal for such measures. A spokesman for the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists says it is too soon to tell whether anything will pass on a federal level, but says compounding pharmacies are an important resource to those who may be allergic to or who may not have access to the pharmaceuticals they need.
