Throwback Thursday: The Beach Boys

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we’re celebrating the career of The Beach Boys in the wake of the release of their latest greatest hits album Fifty Big Ones.

Has any band ever had such a wide appeal as The Beach Boys?  Sure, they likely have their detractors – maybe their music is too saccharine for some, too cloying, or whatever else.  To be sure, some of the subject matter might be a tad silly by 2012′s standards.  However, pop music is by definition universal.  When  said pop music is as transcendent as most of The Beach Boy’s output (and really everything on Pet Sounds) it becomes timeless.  That’s how you can get away with releasing 34 compilation albums.  Their latest, Fifty Big Ones, presents The Beach Boys for what they are – a perfect distillation of what pop music can and should be.  Though there are the not-so-subtle appeals to youth culture that would appear almost cynical today – cars, endless summers, and, of course, surfing – the song writing and arranging is still fresh.  No matter what decade we’re in, catchy is catchy.  Huge, hooky choruses will always get people singing along.  Perfectly constructed pop songs made in the early 60′s  are still just as perfectly constructed in 2012.  51 years into The Beach Boys existence, this is probably the best cross-section of material to be officially produced for the band.  Tune in at 5pm today to hear some tracks off of the “new” album!
