The WERS Artist Of The Week is The Tallest Man On Earth, whose latest record, There’s No Leaving Now, is out now! The Tallest Man On Earth is the moniker of singer-songwriter, Kristian Matsson who hails from Dalarna, Sweden and has been releasing records as The Tallest Man On Earth since 2006.
The first Tallest Man On Earth release is a self-titled EP that was released in 2006. Two years later, Matsson released his first LP, Shallow Grave, which received praise from critics such as Pitchfork Media. His sophomore record, The Wild Hunt, was released in 2010. Once again this record was critically acclaimed and topped many end of the year best-of lists. A track from the record, “A Lion’s Heart”, was even featured on the HBO television series, Hung.
Flash forward two years and There’s No Leaving Now, Matsson’s third LP as The Tallest Man On Earth and arguably his breakout record. The album features the singles “1904″ and “Wind And Walls” and peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Matsson says that he wanted this record to have a sound that wasn’t super minimalistic, but didn’t sound like a rock band either. He also performed at the 2012 Newport Folk Festival to supportThere’s No Leaving Now.
Matsson’s folk sound and lyrical content often is compared to that of Bob Dylan, so if you are a fan of Dylan, Nick Drake or Woody Guthrie, you’ll definitely enjoy The Tallest Man On Earth. Do yourself a favor and give There’s No Leaving Now a chance if you haven’t already and keep listening to WERS to hear music from The Tallest Man On Earth!
