The xx has released a mobile application to accompany their sophomore album, Coexist, which was released earlier this past September. The free app is available for iPhone and Android phones, and is meant to enhance the band’s new album. While I don’t know of any other bands have their phone applications, I can’t say I’m entirely surprised. The xx’s music is deeply ingrained in electronics. Their drummer makes all of the rhythm electronically, has become a well known electronic artist, and performs with a drum machine and computer on stage.
However, for a band so technologically aware, the app is kind of a disappointment. If you own their latest album digitally, you can interact with their songs via a song visualizer (which is really cool). But if you don’t own the album, the app offers little content you couldn’t find online. Main free content includes youtube streaming, tour dates, the online store, and the latest news from the band, which could easily be found with a quick google search. I think the idea of an app has a lot of potential, but for a band so electronically minded I would expect more.
Here’s the lead single “Angels” off The xx’s new album, Coexist.
