“Lately” by Tyrese VS “Lately” by Anita Baker
Tyrese sparked the world with his good looks and amazing voice during the 90s and still until this day. “Lately” was one of his popular songs and it brought a slow, smooth rhythm and blues vibe. Recently, the eight-time Grammy Award winning songstress Anita Baker released a remake of the song as the debut single off of her first album in seven years. It’s no question that her voice is simply amazing on the song. In my opinion, she shows more vocal depth than Tyrese on this particular song. However, I am going to have to go with the original version. I think it effectively captures the entire message and vibe of the R&B industry during that time and can represent 90s R&B music as a whole. I am a fan of Anita Baker, but I wish she would have chosen one of her own personal songs to release as a single and gave us what we have been missing from her for seven years instead of reminding us of another artist.
