Mixtape Mayhem: Succubi

For her latest single, Azealia Banks has teamed up with renowned producer Araabmuzik to create “Succubi”. Araabmuzik in the past has worked with artists such as the A$AP Mob, Cam’ron, Jim Jones, and Juelz Santana. His style is characterized by using chopped samples paired with synthetic drums. This a break from what Banks has typically employed in her beats; in the past, her hits have sampled songs by electronic artists such as Lazy Jay and Zebra Katz.

“Succubi” also sounds much different from herprevious works. In the past, Banks’ songs were a unique mash-up of house and hip-hop. The verses are sharp and quick, weaving in and out of the builds and drops of the beat.

Oftentimes, she’ll switch from rapping to singing in order to match the pace of the music. This latest differs in that it is free of all that. That’s right, no singing, no crashes to get you dancing. This is Azealia rhyming all the way through the song, more in the typical sense you would picture a rap song. Could this be a new style emerging for her? We’ll have to wait for the next mixtape.
